Hyderabad, Jan 9 (PTI) Union minister Tariq Anwar today underlined the need to promote Urdu language in the country. "Promotion of Urdu as language of instruction is the aim of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU). It is our primary responsibility to achieve this aim. Despite being one of the most important Indian languages Urdu is virtually in exile in its own country", said the union minister of State for agriculture and food processing industries. He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the 15th Foundation Day celebrations of MANUU. Anwar described the establishment of Urdu University as an effort by the Government to promote Urdu language. "It is our duty to deliver responsibilities with all consciousness. Students from the Urdu University shall not feel stranger after graduating. They shall be able to rub shoulders with others", Anwar said. Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Miyan presided over the function attended by Prof Rudi Matthee, Munroe, professor of Middle East History, University of Delaware USA who was the guest of honour on the occasion. He delivered a lecture on "Historical Connections: Iran, Ottoman Empire and India,". Anwar said it was due to democratic principles that every language in the country has an equal opportunity to flourish and being promoted. "India is a country where numerous languages and dialects are spoken. People belonging to different cultures, sections and religions live here. It is not an easy task to keep them binding. It is the power of Indian Democracy which has united the people", he added.
